Do not upset the applecart!
“Apple” (manzana) you may know. Cart (carro), and “hand-carts” (carros de mano) you may know too. An applecart (carrito de manzanas) is literally a small handcart used for selling fruit.
There is also an expression: “to upset the applecart”. The phrase means means to disrupt (trastornar) plans, spoil (estropear, desbaratar) or ruin (arruninar) arrangements, or cause trouble.
Two examples:
- My intention was not to upset the applecart (…desbaratar los planes).
- Mr Starmer has upset the applecart with his attitude to NATO (…su actitud hacia la OTAN).
So, have you ever (una vez…) upset the applecart?
