What is the “setback”?

A setback (obstáculo, retroceso, revés) is an obstacle to progressing something: it delays (retarda) a project or a plan.

Contemplate these examples:

• Mr. Sánchez ́s new taxes are going to setback the economy. He has created a major economic setback (ha creado un retroceso económico).

• The new taxes (…van a costarme…) are going to “set me back” 1000 euros every year.

• After several setbacks (después de muchos contratiempos), the building of an opera house in Tenerife will continue (continuará).

• Life is full of setbacks, no? La vida está llena de contratiempos, ¿no?
